The Season of Taking

Thanksgiving is over. You ate all the turkey, stuffing and pie you could stuff in your pie hole, turkey. Now is the real deal holiday season: Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, oh my! It’s the season of gifts. The season of giving. But, more importantly, it is the Season of Taking. Yes. Taking.

Taking care of yourself, big guy! Ha! You didn’t see that coming, did you?

In this season of thinking about others, don’t forget about yourself. It’s just like on an airplane. You can’t save your children if you’re busy drowning in an ocean of stress and despair. So put your oxygen mask on and grab hold of that flotation device that used to be your seat cushion. It’s time to elevate the season, by focusing on you: mind, body and soul.

In the spirit of this newly dubbed Season of Taking, try out a class at your gym or at one of the crossfit or specialty gyms you’ve been curious about. There are a ton of good deals to be had, especially this time of year. I just began getting my butt kicked at CKO Kickboxing. Technically, no one actually hits you back in these classes, but I’m pretty sure the heavy bag did more damage to me than I did to it. Plus, the trainer was no joke. We did squats, planks and pushups, before we got around to the uppercuts, jabs and roundhouse kicks. After all that, it was easy to picture his face on the bag while I punched and kicked with all the power I could muster. My efforts may have been laughable, but when I walked out of there I felt great. It was pure “me time,” geared towards a healthier body and clearer mind.

Kickboxing is kicking my butt. #BulletproofCoffee keeps me on my feet. Love that butter coffee! #ElevateTheSeason #ad

I’m not sure if I could have made it through the whole kickboxing session without the right fuel and a ton of caffeine. By now, you’ve probably heard of Bulletproof Coffee. Yes, the “butter coffee thing.” And, yes, it is as unbelievably amazing as it sounds. First, you start with a rich, kick-ass coffee that is NOT not a delivery system for performance-robbing mold toxins. Then you throw in pure grass-fed ghee and Brain Octane Oil, which is derived from coconut oil, but is odorless, tasteless and metabolizes crazy fast for a quick and long lasting brain boost. (Bulletproof makes it easy to get everything you need by offering a variety of starter kits.) You mix it all up in your blender and out comes a creamy, foamy cup of energy and deliciousness. It somehow keeps your body full and your mind sharp. Because science! (Here’s the science.)

Now that you’re exercised and energized, do something that will really put a spring in your step. Feed your soul. I’m going to start volunteering. Other than when I was trying to look good on college applications–approximately 1 million years ago–I have never really volunteered. For anything. Ever. I’m a bad person. But I’m trying to be better! I’d like to make a difference outside my own little sphere. I have already signed up to help support the Hudson Pride Connections Center, “a home and voice for the diverse LGBTQ community.” I have no idea what I’m going to be doing there yet, but I’m excited about being an ally and an advocate for equality.

This holiday season, you’re going to do a lot of things for a lot of people. Elevate the season by making sure one of those people is you.

OH MY GOD BUTTER IN COFFEE WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE @bulletproof #elevatetheseason #buttercoffee #coffee #ad

Also, drink a lot of really good coffee. You’re going to need it.

Ha! I could have regurgitated their scientific reasoning, but it would have sounded ridiculous. I never sound dumber than when I try to sound smart, because it’s really obvious I have no idea what I’m talking about.

Every post is the best. Not just this one!

  1. Love it! What a great concept; Season of Taking. As a big self-care advocate, I can totally get behind that 🙂

Also as a fellow coffee addict! Speaking of which, I think I may need another cup.
