Conquering my Fear of Drywall Anchors with the DIYZ Mobile App

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by DIYZ. All opinions are 100% mine. The DIYZ app is free to download and is available in the Apple App Store for iPhone and Google Play for Android. For a limited time, the video-chat feature is free!

Using a drywall anchor should be simple. I’m sure for most people it is. But I either pre-drill the hole too and the anchor wobbles around in there or too small and I can’t push the anchor in the wall without breaking it. Needless to say, I am no handyman. I’m not even handy, man. But I am still a man. I have my pride!

If something big needs to be done around the house, I will gladly call someone who won’t get electrocuted, flood the basement or do too much damage to the existing structure. Some home improvement projects, however, are so “easy” that making that call is just too embarrassing. So I won’t call but I also avoid doing the project because I’m afraid I’ll mess it it up.

Has drill. Doesn’t have a clue.

One such neglected project was hanging curtains in the kitchen. I know. Easy breezy lemon squeezy. Well it’s tough for me, so back off! Aside from making sure everything is hung straight, I have to get the drywall anchors into the drywall.

We have no curtains, so all the neighbors are judging our messy kitchen.

My concern is that I’m going to break the anchor or maybe break the wall. It could happen. It pretty much has. The last time I tried to use wall anchors was in my kids’ room. I couldn’t get the anchor into the wall without making the hole huge. I kept pushing to no avail; I wacked it with a hammer and broke the plastic anchor. I ended up just screwing the screw into the drywall. It’s pretty screwed up.

Sorry, kids, daddy tried.

I partnered with the DIYZ app to help me out in my time of need. I needed to get those anchors in the drywall. I needed to get those curtains up. I needed to hide our kitchen mess from our neighbors. I needed my wife to stop reminding me that she’d reminded me a thousand times to please put up the curtains, already.

The app has a ton of projects to browse through, from the basics (like my wall anchors) to replacing toilets, installing LED under cabinet lighting and even making a handy dandy beer caddy. Each project has a corresponding video and a step-by-step guide. It tells you beforehand what tools and safety equipment are needed. If there’s something you’re missing, you can purchase it right then and there from the app via Amazon. If you need any extra help, a real life Pro Advisor can talk you through it via video-chat or phone call.

The curtain rod I purchased had basic instructions but not the measurement of the screw or the size bit I was supposed to use to pre-drill a hole for the anchors. I watched the video on the DIYZ app and the process seemed pretty easy. They mentioned self-drilling anchors, so I bought a package of those. It didn’t work. The bit would still not go all the way in…it was the same problem!

Difficulty: Beginner. We’ll see about that.

I started with a small bit and kept getting bigger. I re-watched the video on the app and gained some confidence. I could this. I did it! Sort of. The anchor was still sticking out a bit. I gently GENTLY! tapped it with a hammer. It was close to flush against the wall and once I drilled in the screw it was perfect!

Oh my god it’s happening!!!

Wow, what a difference!

Once that was done, I just had to repeat the process five more times. Each time it got a little easier. And like that, the curtain was up, my kitchen was private and my wife was happy. Thank you, DIYZ!

It’s still a mess, but the curtain looks nice.

Has anyone seen my kids?
